Windy and Carl - Undercurrent

The lamented Silver Medalist returns from hiatus with promises of gold, frankspencer and mirrors. New Year blues prompted yours truly to do a "Bon Iver" and relocate to a log cabin and attempt to make my own private internet out of string, blu tack, and thinly veiled contempt for Liverpool FC, but alas the project failed after I could only get around 256kps speed with such a flimsy base infrastructure. The heroic McClow was left pulling the wagon on his own on Detritus TV, and that he did with furious abandon. The period of reflection was not a wasted one, as I have returned invigorated with glittery new youtube baubles. Now, let's be quiet and savour the dronecore of Windy and Carl.

Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth - They Reminisce Over You

DetritusTV didn't bother to wear its' glasses today, so had to peer a little closer when viewing the concert listings in the local record store. As the blurry characters slowly emerged a name was decipherable among the fog of letters. DetritusTV was glad to see that name was Pete Rock playin' next month. Pete Rock with Cl Smooth were legends but their place in the rap pantheon has never seemed assured for reasons beyond us. On youtube one poster describes this as the Greatest Track
EVER. ThomasMichealMeyer we think you may be right.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Everything With You

DetritusTV may be just made of a cathode ray and a few circuits but we had formative years too when the wires were connected. So we were please to be reminded of this time by the C86, early Teenage Fanclub soundin' The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

Its distilled indie pop and even has a Super 8 vid but we like it.

Animal Collective - My Girls

DetritusTV is certainly surprised that the catchiest tune its heard this year is from Animal Collective. We've had it on repeat for the last few days and its instant likeability is seriously hampering efforts to progress into the Merriweather Pavilion.

The Beatles - A Day In The Life

DetritusTV is certainly in favour of lists as they provide the perfect distraction, their assembly being the pinnacle of procrastination. It is however, a long time since DetritusTV perused a list as extensive as JBev's ultimate countdown of Beatles tracks. It's basically a countdown, from in his opinion the worst Beatles track through to the best and in addition he writes quite extensively about each song. While his choices are at times random especially the endless dismissal of the White Album (the weird & bad tracks are what made it even more enjoyable) it is an entertaining read.

So here's the No.1 which is a good choice and link to list too.

Sid Vicious - My Way

One of Detritus TV's favourite videos is Sid Vicious's cover of Sinatra's My Way.

BBC Radio 4 are playing a documentary tonight about Sid and it can be found here.

Telepathe - Devil's Trident

One of the most strictly enforced rules for having a new band in 2009 is that you're from Brooklyn so Telepathe were glad when this arbitrary and geographically specific musical criteria was introduced.

Ra Ra Riot - Ghosts Under Rocks

DetritusTV heard the singer with hotly tipped band for 2009 White Pies mouthing of on the radio today. He said, (now remember this is a new band just starting out) that the government wasn't doing enough to combat illegal downloading of music. At least Lars Ulrich was in the recording business for about 40 years or so when he dumped in a courtroom lists of the names of Metallica fans who had downloaded his music without permission, this guy has been around for 5 minutes. Has he not heard of HypeMachine et al, its how these bands gain exposure. DetritusTV predicts that by March 2009 we will have forgotten about White Pies and their existence will have been nothing but a momentary blip in our consciousness.

Here's Ra RA Riot:

Beta Residue Week - The Beta Band

There's really only one song that we could complete this momentous Beta Residue Week with and that's Dry The Rain which is surely the Beta's finest moment if not musics (there is an argument). The Beta live show is legendary so a vid of the song in concert is attached also.

For completeness Gordon Anderson who is also in The Aliens records under the name Lone Pigeon but there's no quality vids online that DetritusTV could tune into.

And for some reason the vids don't remind DetritusTV of any online games, strange that.

Beta Residue Week - The Aliens

Welcome to another day in this week of Beta Residue where we examine the indie group version of mitosis. Yesterday we considered The Aliens and as as the division of the Betas was limited we must take a closer look at The Aliens. So here they are:

Beta Residue Week - The Aliens

Beta Residue Week continues to elucidate DetritusTV viewers on the tangled and fractious history of The Beta Band. From the implosion of this group The Aliens emerged and they created Music, yes Music! Much of this music was of the happy kind as can be seen in the attached vid.

Beta Residue Week - The Beta Band

DetritusTV thinks its fair to say that the Beta Band never fully realised their true potential due to a whole host of reasons. For instance DetritusTV always remembers when their first full length record was released the band openly decried that it was rubbish which is not the best form of promotion. It was this kind of behaviour that made them always interesting and they certainly stood out from their anodyne peers.

Beta Residue Week - King Biscuit Time

McClow returns after his icy wanderings and is back thawing out at DetritusTV. Thanks to Jimmy Joe Jackson for looking after things.

You may have noticed that the arts pages of magazines and papers are awash with tales of the newest bands and noises that you must like in 2009. Listen to White Pies and Little Boots they demand! but we at DetritusTV have decided to deal with slightly less contemporary matters such as bands that have broken up. This week comes the turn of one of the most sorely missed groups of all - The Beta Band. This week we'll play vids by off-shoots, bands created by former members and the odd Beta vid.

First up is King Biscuit Time which is the name Steve Mason of the Beta Band now records under. He released one album in 2006 and his website is disabled so not sure of the future for The Biscuit as he's known.

This vid reminded me of a great online game called Line Rider which is free to try out here.

Joe Jackson - Look Sharp

Jimmy Joe Jackson here, what a great week I've had looking after DetritusTV, hope you all enjoyed my contributions, sharp wasn't it.

For the last vid I've posted one of my alter ego's vids.

And final lyric for you all to enjoy.

"LOOK SHARP - SEE YAH"

Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone

Hey kids Jimmy Joe Jackson is still here ain't that great. I received a letter today signed by McClow and Silver Medalist, it reads:

Dear Jimmy Joe,

Thanks for looking after the blog for the last few days, things are certainly looking alot sharper. Sorry we wont be back for a while as the dreamweaving business has taken me to the icy caverns of the Sligeach highlands and Silver Medalist informs me that the icy downturn has hit his homestead particularly bad with most things frozen including the internet.

Keep up the good work

McClow

Silver Medalist

Music Vid today comes from Swedish singer you all like Lykke Li.

Lyric for today:

"Is that sharp?
Is it
Is it
It is
Yes Yes"

Jonathan Johansson - En hand i himlen

Hey, Jimmy Joe Jackson here, yes still, as I think McClow is lost in the highlands and Silver Medalist says that the enter button is broken on his laptop.

But thats no prob as the longer I stay here the sharper things get.

Heres some new music by the Swedish producer Jonathan Johansson not to be confused with the Icelandic ethereal noise composer (thats his official title) Johann Johansson.

And a lyric or two to mull over:

"Hold that tiger
Hold that tiger
Hold that tiger

Where's that tiger?
Where's that tiger?
Where's that tiger?"

Fever Ray - If I had A Heart

Hey, Jimmy Joe Jackson here again as McClow is wandering the highlands and Silver Medalist is still searching for the internet. No probs though as the blog is looking a lot sharper since I arrived.

More new music and todays vid is by Fever Ray who are an off shoot of The Knife.

More of my lyrics for you to consider till next time -

"And when I die and go to pure pop heaven
The angels will gather around
And ask me for my whole life story
And ask for that fabulous sound
But I know they're gonna stop me
As I start going through every line
And say please not the whole damn album
Nobody has that much time"

A Camp - Stronger Than Jesus

Hey Kids, Jimmy Joe Jackson here, this country's no.1 Joe Jackson cover singer. While those fools McClow and Silver Medalist are of skiving its time for me to sharpen up this blog.

You may have read about the latest happening bands tipped for 09 but there's a group I'll tip to make it big. They're called A Camp, yes A Camp, not the sharpest of names but they do have Nina Perrson of Cardigans fame singin'.

Here's some wise words from my song Tuzla to ponder till next time.

"Look at the guy selling beer
Where the hell did he get it from?"
