Egyptrixx - Chryalis Records feat Trust

The warbled synth lines in Egyptrixx's last album Bible Eyes at times makes for uncomfortable listening but it all fits together nicely in this track. The drum beat is very reminiscent of the DJ Mujava track from a few years back, attached also cause its qual!!

One of the best live acts I've seen recently is Future Islands. Their lead singer was as theatrical on stage as his voice would imply. Apart from the quality of the tracks what most stood out at the gig was their definite lack of pretence. Last year's record On the Water is highly recommended.

John Maus - Believer

It really is hard to believe this sporadically updated blog was begun in 2008, it really seems like no length since then.

One of the albums that didn't feature as frequently as I would have predicted on the end of year album lists was John Maus's cryptically titled - We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves. Its a quality record with a really distinctive mood and sound.

I saw his live show this year and it was certainly distinctive. Mr Maus basically shouted along to his own record. I'm not sure what to make of the gig but it was different.

The video-game Rage was released this week. It's the first game produced by ID in quite a while and it really seemed to just arrive out of nowhere with very little pre-release publicity. I've played a few hours and its a really solid FPS. The same could be said of the new Matyn album Ghost People which is just out (only part not apply - it's not an FPS). Video is like a really souped up OPN graphic used in his live shows.

The good thing about about trawling through new music and listening to artists you're not familiar with is that on some rare occasions you'll hear something exceptional. That happened this week listening to Loren Connor's new album Red Mars. He sounds like a blissed out John Fahey and the new record at times reminds me of Vincent Gallo's underrated solo effort.

Enno Velthuys - Swamp

Er...Happy new year? Enno Velthuys is/was a Dutch ambient artist who released tapes in the early to mid-eighties. He is the son of author Max Velthuys. That's as much as I know. Where he's hiding now is anyone's guess. To his eternal credit he has left behind a mind melting collection of shamefully ignored music, swinging from delicate pieces of sonorous melancholia, to skittish incidental music for Lucasarts point-and- click adventures, to immersive subterranean synth grimbiance, such as this track Swamp. He strikes me as Eno's slacker, stoner mate who was cooking up his own brilliant brews but was too binned to get his shit together.

Julian Lynch - Garden 2

Julian Lynch sounds like an Irish name but he's probably not. I can assume he's not Irish cos he's made loopy trancendental mini-marvel with this track; a glistening, hypnotic jangly layered riff slithers all over some mystical chanted vocals, butressed by some weird, reedy wind instrument, probably clarinet. It should go on for days, but it mystifyingly ends after a mere 3.32 minutes and seconds. Do what i do and play it on repeat for ages.

Best Coast - Sun Was High (So Was I)

I don't know anything about this band and I couldn't be bothered to Google them. So lets just make something up shall we? Best Coast took their name from a misheard conversation when lead singer Ranulph Van Zorn was eating a bowl of Cheerios and remarked to lead guitarist Ty Stretch that he was wearing the 'best coat'. The misnomer also inspired their jangly pop-psychedelia sound and blissed-out west coast riffage. This is a tune that should make to sun feel guilty for not coming out to play. Come on Mr Sun, put your hat on and parade about like a jezebel.

DetritusTV has had the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, Its Blitz, on repeat the last few days. Zero and Heads Will Roll offer a propulsive synthy opening to the record and that thankfully continues right through, the track Runaway is amazing.

Some have said that DetritusTV should shy away from any group that appears on Jools Holland and should defo not play a clip from his show but the YYY's have made it hard to post vids so Jools is our only option.

So imagine the most bombastic introduction that Jools would give:

Its inspired by the fears of an encroaching surveillance society and the resulting loss of personal liberty. The Horrors - Sea Within A Sea

If someone had suggested in 2006 that The Horrors would one day make a good record they would have been swiftly derided and quickly directed to the fact that said group are nothing more than professional event openers whose hipster haircuts guarantee a few photos.

But Geoff Barrow of Portishead produced the latest record and the results are really interesting. Listen to new single Sea within a Sea which DetritusTV can only describe as a psyched Philip Glass motorik fusion.

For reasons we won't elaborate on DetritusTV ended up buying the Glass Candy record Beatbox twice in the space of one week in two different countries. Its quality electroy/italo pop but this is the track that brought them to DetritusTV's attention. It featured in the closing credits of the film of the year so far - Bronson.

We also had the chance to see A Camp live last night. They decorated the venue's bland stage in an Ibsen parlour style and we can report that their wistful Scandinavian sound was well received and a good time was had by all.

Nite Jewel has created a much needed new genre - dopey disco. Her languid, ethereal voice and morphine drip production lull you into a becalmed, balmy, nocturnal (dis)coma. She has even been deigned worthy enough to release some tracks on the Italians Do It Better label, that hothouse of all things italowankycool. Her album Good Evening is a soft-centred, beguiling charmer and she is going to be a lot less popular than Lady GaGa, but way better, playing cinderella to the laters Ugly Sister.

DetritusTV has resigned itself to indefinite exile on this beach. It seems to stretch on for miles and the few beach dwellers seem at a loss to understand our plight and that we need passage home. It has a song by Beirut and while its not of his new album March of the Zapotec (c'mon its a conch we found on the beach, it hasn't updated its playlist in a few weeks - so what) it is one of his best.

Our calls for help went unheeded and DetritusTV remains on this forgotten beachhead in Scotland. While foraging around the shore we found a portable music device that predates even the discman and we think the walkman too. It plays mostly ambient aquatic seascapes and is known as a conch.

HELP US!! DetritusTV is still languishing on some forgotten beach on this isle called Scotland. The icy crossing is gone and we've been left gazing across the ocean at our distant homeland.

Another friendly beach dweller approached us today and recited some poetry by the Scottish poet Philip Larkin:

Seventy feet down
The sea explodes upwards,
Relapsing, to slaver
Off landing-stage steps -
Running suds, Rejoice!

While these lines alleviated our misery somewhat, it's transit home we need not poetry.

Fortunately this beach person also had some music on his discman and let us listen to two Mogwai tracks one being our favourite 2 Rights Make One Wrong.

Hopefully DetritusTV will make it home soon.

Glasgow Week - The Pastels

After a few days in Glasgow Detritus TV had sufficiently recovered from the ice sea crossing to attempt the return home. We traveled to the coast expecting to use the icy sea path again but lo... the ice crossing to our land had melted and we were left languishing on the shoreline pining for home.

A beach dweller then approached and we told him of our sorry tale, to alleviate our woes and to nicely tie in with our Glasgow week he let us listen to this song by The Pastels on his walkman.

Glasgow Week - The Phantom Band

The other day part of the sea adjoining our isle completely froze over so DetritusTV took this icy opportunity and wandered into another land. We would recommend this form of international travel to all as its loads of fun sliding down frozen waves. We ended up in this city called Glasgow and were told by the locals of all the great music they have. These Glasgow people were right they have an amazing heritage in producing great popular music. So this week we will feature bands from Glasgow and we start with newcomers The Phantom Band. This group sound like a Scottish Smog one moment and the next Surfing harmonies divided by barbershop - Enjoy.

DetritusTV was sat at work today but was distracted by the rally cries and cheers that drifted in the window from a protest taking place outside. The photo above is a picture that we quickly took out the office window, very symmetrical protesters. As the hum of the crowd faded into the distance DetritusTV was online and saw that similar gatherings were occurring all over Europa, will 09 be the next 68.

If so some good marching music would possibly come from Peverlist, or not, who knows.

Galaxie 500 - Snowstorm

DetritusTV thinks its surely the time for the return of our popular regional weather report series. Took the above photo on the way home on the 120 bus this evening and yes the Northside of Dubh Linn has a fair bit of snow, the aurora came out for a bit not many people noticed though. Temperatures are down in the minus figures we'd guess.

DetritusTV is glad it wasn't part of the fevered scramble that gripped this land last Friday. Middle management offices and cubicles alike cast aside their work concerns for a few hours that morn and incanted the name of Bruce in a hushed reverence as they apprehensively glared at the ticket timer online.

"You must wait 16 minutes, you must wait 21 minutes. Sold Out - but wait a totally unexpected new date has been added put me done for 5 more tickets - 16 minutes - 25 minutes" and so on.

And while the economy collapses around us its always heartening to see that people will pay literally hundreds to see an aging multi-millionaire rock star churn out the hits again and again and again.

The lamented Silver Medalist returns from hiatus with promises of gold, frankspencer and mirrors. New Year blues prompted yours truly to do a "Bon Iver" and relocate to a log cabin and attempt to make my own private internet out of string, blu tack, and thinly veiled contempt for Liverpool FC, but alas the project failed after I could only get around 256kps speed with such a flimsy base infrastructure. The heroic McClow was left pulling the wagon on his own on Detritus TV, and that he did with furious abandon. The period of reflection was not a wasted one, as I have returned invigorated with glittery new youtube baubles. Now, let's be quiet and savour the dronecore of Windy and Carl.

DetritusTV didn't bother to wear its' glasses today, so had to peer a little closer when viewing the concert listings in the local record store. As the blurry characters slowly emerged a name was decipherable among the fog of letters. DetritusTV was glad to see that name was Pete Rock playin' next month. Pete Rock with Cl Smooth were legends but their place in the rap pantheon has never seemed assured for reasons beyond us. On youtube one poster describes this as the Greatest Track

The Beatles - A Day In The Life

DetritusTV is certainly in favour of lists as they provide the perfect distraction, their assembly being the pinnacle of procrastination. It is however, a long time since DetritusTV perused a list as extensive as JBev's ultimate countdown of Beatles tracks. It's basically a countdown, from in his opinion the worst Beatles track through to the best and in addition he writes quite extensively about each song. While his choices are at times random especially the endless dismissal of the White Album (the weird & bad tracks are what made it even more enjoyable) it is an entertaining read.

DetritusTV heard the singer with hotly tipped band for 2009 White Pies mouthing of on the radio today. He said, (now remember this is a new band just starting out) that the government wasn't doing enough to combat illegal downloading of music. At least Lars Ulrich was in the recording business for about 40 years or so when he dumped in a courtroom lists of the names of Metallica fans who had downloaded his music without permission, this guy has been around for 5 minutes. Has he not heard of HypeMachine et al, its how these bands gain exposure. DetritusTV predicts that by March 2009 we will have forgotten about White Pies and their existence will have been nothing but a momentary blip in our consciousness.

Beta Residue Week - The Beta Band

DetritusTV thinks its fair to say that the Beta Band never fully realised their true potential due to a whole host of reasons. For instance DetritusTV always remembers when their first full length record was released the band openly decried that it was rubbish which is not the best form of promotion. It was this kind of behaviour that made them always interesting and they certainly stood out from their anodyne peers.

Beta Residue Week - King Biscuit Time

You may have noticed that the arts pages of magazines and papers are awash with tales of the newest bands and noises that you must like in 2009. Listen to White Pies and Little Boots they demand! but we at DetritusTV have decided to deal with slightly less contemporary matters such as bands that have broken up. This week comes the turn of one of the most sorely missed groups of all - The Beta Band. This week we'll play vids by off-shoots, bands created by former members and the odd Beta vid.

First up is King Biscuit Time which is the name Steve Mason of the Beta Band now records under. He released one album in 2006 and his website is disabled so not sure of the future for The Biscuit as he's known.

Ah the end of the year and McClow of DetritusTV would like to give a few thanks. First to thank is Silver Medalist and we hope he soon enters internet land. The other thanks must go to the bottom button on McClow's jacket who put in a sterling effort over the past few weeks and with even the seasonal pressure of an expanding waistline and extra layers of clothes kept steady. This button held on with only one string for a number of weeks and this won't be forgotten.

McClow's Review of 2008 - And Record of the Year

In the holiday chasm that is the time between Christmas and New Year DetritusTV thought the relative calm of this period would be the perfect time for reflection and to share with you all our review of the year.

DetritusTV was gestated in July of 2008 and like a neotenous offspring we clambered and crawled our way around the darkly lit and barely digitised corners of the blogosphere. Thanks to regular updates and bouyant viewing figures DetritusTV has made it this far and passes into 2009 with completly unrealistic expectations as to what it will achieve.

If you have time we'd like to meander on a bit about music we liked in 08. This year witnessed one of the fiercest agrarian pop wars in recent memory as Midlake and Fleet Foxes fought it out with choruses of stoneworkers and greenery and while The Foxes won in terms of popularity DetritusTV thinks in the end Midlake will be known as the artistic victors for making the record with the unwieldy title of The Trials of Van Occupanther. Another artist namely Goldfrapp released an album with a pastoral theme and with its elegiac tone it ensured the band drifted from the mainstream, still a great album though. Releases by No Age and White Denim were pleasingly scuffed and rollicking and White Denim had one of the catchiest singles with Let's Talk About It. The Chromatics had the best record that you couldn't buy in a store and Alias's Resurgam was quality as was Katie Kim's Twelve. In terms of electronic music DetritusTV enjoyed the Shed album entitled Shedding the Past but would with no hesitation name Black Dog's Radio Scarecrow as the best record of 2008. One half of DetritusTV can say that it realigned the parameters of electronic music and what it can achieve and yet remained entirely listenable and enjoyable.

Micah P Hinson released an album but not much notice seems to have been taken as everyone was listening to Bon Iver's great songs that were actually written by his log cabin.

Most Annoying Words/Letters/Phrases of 2008

1. Elbow - One day when you hear the word elbow you will only think of its anatomical meaning and the image of any plod rock band will have long since evaporated. That will be a fine day indeed, yes sir. For the past year, you may have noticed that every mention of this group is prefaced with "after years of hard graft/work when no one was really bothered this is finally their year" Well to start we're talking about musicians not someone drilling oil in the North Sea, no one cares about their so-called hard graft. And the reason that no one listened until now is that they're one of the most severely dull groups ever to shuffle onto the moth eaten behemoth that is the British indie rock scene.

2. Credit Crunch - a particular downer for all and a shame that the most used phrase
of 2008 if it were anthropomorphised would I imagine be an uppity, irksome little f***.

3. Mgmt - Simply the most annoying collection of letters used this year. In an interview I read these bandana'd goons said that the name was mysterious. Tell you what the name SUN O))) conjures up some element of mystery the name mgmt reminds DetritusTV of waiting on a Monday morning wallowing in the mundane outside a middle managers office to report why we're ten minutes late for work.

4. Quantum of Solace - Or Question of Sport as it should be known. You really wonder why? Not that DetritusTV would watch to find out.
